How to choose the right fabric and fit for your clothes

Fabric is the most essential component of a garment. No matter how expertly the garment's seams are sewn, if it is constructed from the incorrect fabric, it will not do credit to the design and will appear like a disaster.

Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Clothing

Be enthusiastic about fabric shopping! Prepare yourself mentally, and enter the store with a picture of your design in your head (or in your hand), knowing the colours you want, and having a very definite idea of how the finished garment should look.

It might be easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer amount and variety of fabrics on display, but if you begin your fabric excursion with these considerations in mind, your time spent selecting fabric will be streamlined:

Consider the Material Weight

The GSM (grams per square metre) measurement of a fabric's weight indicates how heavy or light it is. You are not required to measure the fabric's weight in the store. Measuring the fabric weight is a method for determining the material's thickness and distinguishing between lightweight, medium-weight, and heavy-weight fabrics.

Examine the Drape Fabric

The drape determines the flow of the fabric. In other words, stiff textiles have less drape compared to flexible fabrics. Easy! However, use caution with this word. Weight and drape are sometimes mistaken, but they are two distinct elements that determine the appearance of garments.

Contrary to a fabric with a soft drape, which will cause the skirt to fold close to the body, a fabric with more drape will cause the skirt to float away from the body. For instance, if you desire a flowing skirt, you should choose a thin, well-draping fabric, whereas if you like a structured skirt, you should opt for a rigid, thick fabric.

Test the Fabric's Stretch

Stretch is the degree to which a fabric stretches. Fabrics vary in their elasticity (the capacity of textile fibres to "spring back" when stretched). When selecting a fabric with stretch, you must ensure that it is compatible with your pattern, as this can affect how the finished product fits the body.
